The Health and Wellness Committee develops and coordinates public service programs/activities designed to support the national focus of our sorority in the area of Physical and Mental Health, one of the Five-Point Programs. It is the responsibility of this committee to provide the leadership required in advancing the Sorority’s commitment in this area by providing the community with health prevention and education strategies as new concepts evolve on both national and local levels, while working with the Social Action component of the Chapter to educate political representatives to enact appropriate legislation designed to improve access, quality, and cost of health care.
- The Health and Wellness Committee will provide at least one educational program annually to increase community awareness of preventative health strategies, which can reduce the incidence of chronic/major diseases.
- The Health and Wellness Committee, in recognition of the fact that the family is society’s most important institution, will provide support of the local and national initiatives designed to promote stability in African-American family life; portray positive images of African-American men, women, and children; decrease the incidence of adolescent pregnancy and infant mortality; reduce the incidence of domestic violence; and foster increased communication among generations.
- The Health and Wellness Committee, in recognition of the unique health care needs of the poor, elderly, and underinsured, will provide the community with information relative to local and national initiatives designed to address these needs and establish a mechanism in partnership with others to urge local and national political representatives to develop appropriate legislative responses.
- The Health and Wellness Committee, in recognition of the fact that families with children represent the fastest growing sector of the homeless population, will promote and support advocacy efforts in conjunction with Social Action for the rights of all citizens to adequate, affordable, and decent housing, thereby, urging local and national political representatives to increase federal funding in this area thus providing lower cost available housing which will positively impact the nutritional, educational, and overall health care status of the homeless.
